But man are they a good source of laughs:

Kinja'd!!!

Sometimes it’s typical car bro stuff:

Kinja'd!!!

Hood is smash

Sometimes they are unknowingly existential:

Kinja'd!!!

Sometimes they’re assholes:

Kinja'd!!!

Other times they think that WWII fought in 1969 (or Firebirds were built in the 40's)?

Kinja'd!!!

Mostly they’re just street racing idiots, but I do get a laugh out of them at least once a day.

Question? Is there ever any reason to put mid-grade in your car? It seems like every car made in the past thirty years specifies either standard or premium fuels. Is anything actually designed with 87 in mind? I recall something about it being favored for cars designed for leaded fuel, but that pool of vehicles must be vanishingly small at this point. Is there a reason for it to exist beyond taking advantage of people who want to “treat” their car, and supplying people who bought some expensive European car but are too cheap to buy the premium it was designed for?

That I don’t know. But, I’m sure his 97 Cavalier could care less.

I think it is suitably existential either way.

If I remember correctly ( and its been awhile) my 944 asked for 87. I can imagine a use for it but I doubt people buy it much. I really only think premium is for turbos or real high performance stuff and most luxury cars get along fine at 87.

Edit: I think meant to say 89, forgot the ratings, all I buy is premium now lol

In most places I’ve been 87 is standard and 89 is mid. except high altitude places I’ve seen 85.

My first car is required 89 octane minimum, so they do exist, but it’s been a while since I’ve seen one.

Actually you’re right, 87 is low grade, 89 is mid.

GM’s Atlas 4.2 in the Trailblazers, Envoys, and fam recommends 89. Per the manual it’s okay on 87 still, but might ping when you work it hard. I never actually noticed pinging, but it did run noticeably better on mid-grade when I was towing with my Dad’s Envoy. Otherwise that thing only eats regular cause my parents drive like grandparents.

It just occurred to me that my parents are grandparents. Ha.

My motorcycle requires what is mid-grade here (89 I think, maybe 87, I don’t really pay much attention,) but there is absolutely no advantage to using it. The thing runs fine on regular (which is 85, unless it is 87. Man, I really should know more about the stuff I dump in my tank.)

I meant 89 as mid grade, which I think is normal across much of the country. I guess there are a few places (in the Rockies?) that have 85?

My F30 actually requires 89, 91 recommended. Tried a tank and fuel economy became horrid. I think the Shortstar in the Intrigue and Aurora V8 also required 89.

I believe new Hemi engines call for 89 for full power but will run on 87. In ram 5.7s this is the case
